Abstract

Fire needling is a frequently-used needling technique in acupuncture, involving special manipulation in which the needle point is heated over a flame before inserting into a point. Therefore, the fire needle is made of high-temperature-resistant material. It should have enough tensile strength to withstand intense heat and maintain the ability to stay straight once inserted into the human body. In the earl years of our nation [China], the needles used for fire needling were usually sewing needles, stainless steel needles, filiform needles and self-made neeldes; the materials used consisted mainly of stainless steel, copper, and silver; which, it was found, did not meet the requirements for fire needling. After repeated attempts, Professor He Puren made the body of a fire needle with an alloy of tungsten and manganese, and produced an easy-to-hold and thermal-insulated handle. Professor He also enlarged the category for fire needle applications and made it easy to apply in clinical practice.
