Abstract

Daoists (Taoists) have two primary types of breathing practices: belly breathing and reverse breathing. Both of these practices are based upon the origins of human life; both post birth (belly breathing) and pre-birth (reverse breathing) that are popularly known. There is a further type of breathing based upon what Daoists call “qi” breathing that I believe goes further in depth than reverse breathing in a prenatal understanding (an intrauterine type of breathing). The importance of these breathing methods to the internal arts is for the development of the conversion process of jing to qi, qi to shen and shen to the dao. Through this conversion process you go beyond the wisdom of breathing techniques to a higher level of practice that develops a new understanding which expands your being into the Dao.
