Abstract

The tailbone is at the bottom of the spine where the Du Main and foot shaoyin Kidney channel pass. Pain in the tailbone often involves the sacrum, making it difficult to stretch and straighten the back. It often feels better with warmth and with massage. The cause if often Kidney deficiency, and thus Kidney tonification is the mainstay of treatment. However it should be borne in mind that blood stasis, qi blockage, cold injury and dampness all can play their parts and thus should be considered in evaluating the pain. The Shen Shi Zun Sheng Shu (Master Shen’s Book for Revering Life) records a formula for this called Bu Shen tang (Decoction for Tonifying Kidneys) together with a method of addition and subtraction of ingredients.
