Abstract

A systematic review undertaken by bailey to investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture in enhancing human performance determined that methodological quality and/or the Standard for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) of these studies have been shown to be of poor quality. The results from the findings of these studies suggest that there is a neural underlying mechanism involved in enhancing muscle strength. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of acupuncture on ankle plantar flexion muscle strength and to discuss the underlying neural and non-neural mechanism of acupuncture on enhancing muscle strength.
