Abstract

Over the last three issues we have been exploring the traditional Chinese calendar through the lens of the Twenty Four Seasonal Nodes, and in this issue we will cover the Nodes for Summer. These smaller ‘mini-seasons’ are a closer look at the transformations of change in the natural world that the larger segments of the four seasons cannot specify in as great detail. As mentioned in previous installments, each of the Seasonal Nodes is roughly 15 days long, and each has a name in Chinese that attempts to describe what is happening at that time of year in symbolic terms. Many of these names can be quite poetic and evoke images of Yin, Yang or minute changes in the seasons.
