Abstract

From the earliest of times in China both philosopher and physician have recognized the close relationship between humans and nature. The course of the day, the changing seasons of the year, climatic variations, daily weather patterns—these all impact our health and wellbeing in very real ways. Even up to the not so distant past our lives were intimately tied into what happened around us. Our agrarian ancestors all woke and slept with the natural patterns of the sun. They worked harder in summer when nature was more active and rested more in winter when there were no crops to either plant or harvest. In Chinese this idea of our close connection with nature is described in many common saying such as “Heaven, Earth and Humanity are in Harmony” (tian di ren he), and “Heaven and Humanity Unite as One” (tian ren he yi).
