Abstract

This article attempts to review Chinese medical applications of acupuncture and herbal medicine in the treatment of schizophrenia. Compiled clinical evidence on the proposed mechanisms of action underlying the effects of acupuncture is presented, along with practical techniques and applications for Chinese medicine patterns commonly seen in schizophrenic patients. This paper presents classical approaches to schizophrenia from the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine and Sun Simiao's "ghost" prescription and herbal strategies for psychiatric conditions, and it also details relevant clinical evidence.
