Abstract

The path of internal cultivation may, over the course of the years, include a variety of practices. The list of complementary practices is long, and each practice may have its value in an individual’s internal cultivation. There are several angles of approach, and each may be tried in sequence, when the cultivator feels that they have made significant gains by means of that specific practice. When we are making progress with a particular style of quite sitting, we will know when we will also be making progress in other areas of our lives. This is so because we are succeeding in galvanizing a solid core of silence through our practice that allows us to become more skillful in our activities. As long as a particular style is working, or one feels no need to move on to another style, it’s fine to stay with the style that works best. But it is also natural for changes to occur in needs, or in response to one’s development. One may, for example, use guided imagery and/or mantras; or do free-form quiet sitting such as zero mind or “Xuan State”; or perform deity quiet sitting at a shrine which one sets up within one’s home.
