Abstract

Modern acupuncture clinicians are often tasked to assist patents with ongoing care for multidue of chronic conditions. Care and treatment of symptomology and complications that arise after a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) has in the past been relegated to palliative care. Acupuncture can be an effective intervention to reverse adverse effects such as pain, numbness, issues with gait, balance, hearing and sight. The patient in this case presented with main complaints of hemiplegia and neuropathy in his lower extremities. CVA occured one year prior to initiating an acupuncture plan of care. A diagnosis of qi and blood deficiency with kidney yin and yang deficiency was attained during initial intake interview. Interventions implemented, included stand-alone acupuncture and electroacupuncture (E-stim). Outcomes after 24 consecutive treaments were: improvement in balance and gait as patient could walk without assistance, increase sensation of warmth in lower extremities, increased sensation of touch and pressure in the affected area. This case shows evidence that the utilization of acupuncture as a primary intervention for CVA may decrease recovery time, increase patient's quality of life.
