Abstract

A geriatric neutered male canine with pre-existing multi-systemic disease was presented with a non-healing wound of the right rear paw. After culture and sensitivity testing it was discovered that the wound contained multi-drug resistant bacteria (Enterbacter cloacae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus schleiferi and Escherichia coli) and conventional antibacterial therapy was discontinued. The topical Chinese herbal medicine, Golden Yellow Powder, was then selected as a primary would treatment. Several of the herbs in this formula have exhibited antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in human clinical studies. These properties correspond to the treatment of Damp Heat and Toxic Heat patterns according to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). This case demonstrates the potential use and effectiveness of topical Golden Yellow Powder in the treatment of wounds with multiple drug resistant bacteria.
