Abstract

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 34 million Americans have diabetes and another 88 million have prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 95% of these cases. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is arguably the most serious public health crisis in the US after COVID-19 and drug addiction. In a recent article, Dr Virender Sodhi provides some interesting date from the third National Health and Nutritional Exam Survey (NHANES III) (Sodhi 2022). Among the various groups included in the survey is the Pima Indians, who inhabit a region in southern Arizona, on both sides of the US/Mexico border. Those who live on the US side grow very little of their own food and eat a typical American diet. The prevalence of diabetes in this group is 22%. By contrast, their cousins just across the border are more engaged in the physical labor of food production and eat a more traditional diet. Among this Mexican group, the prevalence of diabetes is only 1%. As this example plainly, illustrates, type 2 diabetes is first and foremost a disease of diet and lifestyle.
