Abstract

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of combined acupuncture and herbal formula for male sterility. Method: Thirty-seven sterility cases due to abnormal semen were randomly allocated into two groups, a group of combined acupuncture and herbal formula (observation group, n=25) and a group of combined acupuncture and oral clomifene capsules (control group, n=12). Then the clinical symptoms, routine semen indexes, testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) changes have been observed in two groups respectively before and after treatment. Results: Combined acupuncture and herbal formula obtained substantially better effect than combined acupuncture and oral Western medication (P<0.05). After treatment, the sperm density, 1h survival rate, motility score and normal morphological rates in the observation group were all improved (P<0.05), whereas, there were no statistical differences in the control group except for a decrease in semen volume (P<0.05). Additionally, after treatment, the T and LH values in the control group were significantly elevated (P<0.05); and despite the elevation of FSH, there was no statistical difference. For the observation group, there were no significant changes in T, LH and FSH. Conclusion: Combined acupuncture and herbal formula can obtain accurate efficacy for abnormal semen.
