Abstract

This paper collects and reviews the most recent clinical studies pertaining to the application of acupuncture in the area of disorders related to obstetrics. We divide these applications into ten sections: acupuncture for IVF and IUI, acupuncture for miscarriage, moxibustion for breech presentation, acupressure for morning sickness, acupuncture for inducing labor, acupuncture for labor pain, Chinese herbs for infertility, acupuncture for pregnancy-related vomiting/nausea, acupuncture for pregnancy anxiety, and acupuncture for depression during pregnancy and postpartum depression. The studies reviewed in this paper indicate the enormous potential and unique advantage of acupuncture as a therapeutic modality in obstetrics, and justify a wider application of acupuncture in obstetrics. While this paper demonstrates that rigorous clinical trials and systematic reviews have been conducted on most of the obstetrical disorders cited above, it also reveals the need for even more well-designed and rigorous research studies.
