Abstract

To discuss the clinical effects of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy combined with Chinese herbs in reducing adverse reactions to radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: a total of 100 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were divided into treatment and control groups (n=60, 40 respectively). Patients in the control group received radical radiotherapy alone, while those in the treatment group had acupuncture and moxibustion therapy combined with Chinese herbs in addition to radical radiotherapy. Clinical effects such as adverse reactions were observed for 8 weeks. Results: the incidence of acute radiation injury of mucosa and skin, dry throat and restriction of mouth opening were significantly lower in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: acupuncture, moxibustion therapy, and Chinese herbs play a vital role in reducing the adverse reactions in patients with naspharyngeal carcinoma undergoing radiotherapy.
