Abstract

Bacterial vaginosis mainly presents as an increased vaginal discharge, often with a fishy odor, associated with pain after sexual intercourse, and an itching and burning sensation. Clinically, bacterial vaginosis can have pruritus vulvae, burning or irritation, and may be aggravated after walking , urination, or sexual intercourse. Examination often reveals vulva redness and scratches. There may also sometimes be erosion, eczema or ulceration. Secretions are pale, often uniformly and thinly adhering to the vaginal wall, and may be easily wiped away from the vaginal wall. A diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis is usually based on three of the following criteria: (1) a normal, uniform and thin vaginal discharge, with a fishy, watery appearance; (2) vaginal PH more than 4.5; (3) sample fishy odor or ammonia smell test is positive; (4) microscopic examination of clue cells. Vaginal discharge in the slides, upon adding a few drops saline mixture, shows more than 20% clue cells under 400 times microscopic magnification.
