Abstract

This paper collects and reviews some of the recent important clinical studies pertaining to the application of acupuncture in the area of musculoskeletal disorders. These areas of study are divided into ten sections: low back pain, joint osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder (periarthritis of shoulder), tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), temporomanidublar joint disorders (TMJ), ankle sprain, tendinitis, and fibromyalgia. The studies reviewed in this paper demonstrate both the time-tested classical and the contemporary innovative approach of acupuncture to musculoskeletal disorders, and justify a wider application of acupuncture in orthopedics. Although many rigorous clinical trials have been conducted on most of the musculoskeletal disorders, systematic reviews and meta-analysis still call for even more well-designed studies with increased patient data.
