Abstract

Peripheral facial paralysis or prosopoplegia, facial neuritis is called "Koupi" in Chinese medicine. Because of diminished superficial resistance and insufficiency of meridians, the wind-cold factors invade the Yangming and Shaoyang meridians and cause blockage of the meridians and stagnation of qi and blood. The meridians and tendons then fail to be tonified and finally disease occurs. Its clinical features include sudden onset, stiffness, numbness and relaxation on one side of the face; inability to wrinkle the forehead orcloase the eyes; deviation of the mouth to the contralateral side; disappearance of the nasolabial groove; and before the onset or at the early stage, some patients feel pain in mastoid process behind the ear. How acute stage treatment proceeds has a greater impact on the prognosis.
