Abstract

Dry eye syndrome (also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is a common condition which affects both humans and dogs and is a challenge to treat. In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), dry eye is primarily associated with liver and kidney disorders with the most common patterns including wind-heat in the liver, liver heat with blood stagnation, liver yin deficiency, and/or kidney jing deficiency. This paper discusses pattern differntiation with selection of appropriate acupuncture points and herbal formulas. Based on the author's experience TCVM is an effective therapy for dry eye syndrome. Initially acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines can be combined with traditional therapies and then TCVM alone can be used for long term maintenance.
