Abstract

“The five flavors have certain impacts on the body because of their natural properties; hence they have specific contraindications. Because pungent taste disperses qi, one should avoid eating pungent foods in diseases of the qi. Salty taste purges the blood. Thus in blood disease one should avoid salty foods. Bitter taste drains the bones, and thus should be avoided in bone diseases. Sweet taste bloats the flesh. Thus, in diseases of the flesh, avoid sweet foods. Sour taste contracts the tendons and should therefore be avoided in diseases of the tendons.” –Nei Jing (475-221 B.C.)
