Abstract
For many practioners of East Asian medicine, a common problem involves differentiating the Spleen and Stomach for diagnosis and treatment. Classical texts often combine these two organs in apparent acknowledgement of the real difficulties in separating the yin and yang aspects of the digestive process. For example, in discussions of the well-known Spleen-Stomach School associated with the ideas of Li Dongquan (1180-1252), these two organs are often discussed together. Similarly, many modern cases studies and diagnostic models contain the diagnosis "Spleen-Stomach disharmony" wherein the functions of these organs seem to be conflated. The following pages will propose a method for differentiating the two organs as a means for creating multi-step clinical strategies. The approach described below is based largely on the clinical experience of Beijing professor Wang Juyi. Dr Wang developed his ideas about Spleen and Stomach treatment by carefully analysing difficult clinical cases and reflecting upon concepts outlined in early Chinese medical texts.
