Abstract

The American South has a long history of physicians using negro slaves for medical research. White colonisation extended to the murder of negroes for the purpose of providing bodies for dissection. Many Southern blacks did not leave their homes at night in order to avoid abduction and death by the "night doctor". Experimentation on blacks extended into the 20th century and had a profound effect on their utilisation of health care. The Tuskagee Research Study on black men prior to World War II is only one small example of what many black people endured only 70 years ago in the US.
