Abstract

Tongue diagnosis has long been an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The healthy tongue has balancedmobile (Yang)and moist (Yin)qualities. A healthy tongue should also have enough Blood to give the tongue a pink huethat varies with the species and age of the patient. The StomachQishould be strong enough to generate a thin clear or thinwhite coating. Excesses and Deficiencies ofYin,Blood,YangandQihave distinct correlations in the tongue producingrecognizable qualities such as: a thick white coat (YinExcess), red dry tongue body (Yindeficiency), purple tongue body(Blood Excess), pale dry tongue body (Blood Deficiency), thick yellow tongue coat (YangExcess), pale moist tonguebody (YangDeficiency), lavender tongue body (QiExcess) and pale swollen tongue body (QiDeficiency).
