TCM in metastatic lung cancer: prognosis and complementary treatment of advanced pulmonary non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Abstract

Lung cancer is one of the most frequent and lethal cancers worldwide. The outcome depends on the extent of the diease (stage) and the physical condition of the patient ('performance status') at the time of diagnosis, the histological type, genetic mutations and treatment. The most frequent lung cancer type is non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC)...many patients with metastatic NSCLC seek help with (much less expensive) traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal treatment, which is patient-tailored based on specific TCM symptoms. However, although TCM herbal medication next to chemotherapy is widely used in China, until recently scientific proof according to Western standards was scarce.
