Bees have long inspired the human imagination as characters in literature, in artwork, and as symbols in culture and religion, while their honey has been used as both food and medicine for thousands of years. William Shakespeare may have best captured people’s deep and complex relationship with bees in a line from his play The Life of King Henry the Fifth: “[F]or so work the honey bees, Creatures that by a rule in nature teach The act of order to a peopled kingdom.” However, beyond exemplifying societal order, it is clear that bees are integral to human survival. Honey bees in particular play an important role in plant pollination. They are involved in the pollination of an estimated one of every three bites of food that humans eat and help produce about $15 billion worth of crops each year in the United States alone.
