Abstract

Obesity can affect all ages, sexes, and ethnicities and is associated with certain physiological, environmental, social, economic, and genetic risk factors. This condition increases the risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver disease, and several types of cancer. Appetite suppressants often are used to help treat obesity, but these drugs, which typically affect the central nervous system, can cause gastrointestinal side effects, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata, Hydrangeaceae) leaves are consumed as an herbal tea in Korea and Japan. In a previous report by the authors of the reviewed study, hydrangea leaf extract showed potential to reduce body weight and body fat. The authors proposed an extension of their preclinical studies with a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to investigate whether hydrangea leaf extract affects body weight and body fat in people who are overweight or obese.
