Abstract

Porcine epidemic diarrhea caused by a corona virus, is an acute, highly contagious, disease that is characterized by acute enteritis and lethal watery diarrhea. Severe dehydration frequently leads to high mortality in piglets. It is an economically important swine disease which was first identified in the United Kingdom, but has increasingly become a problem in Asian countries, including China. Treatment of porcine epidemic diarrhea using Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and in particular Chinese herbal medicine can be effective when compared to limited options in Western medicine (fluids, antibiotics). A review of several herbal medicines demonstrating efficacy as well as clinical case examples are covered.
