Abstract

Taijiquan is a complex and integrated system that was created in the Ming-Qing transition period. It drew upon the most effective of popular Chinese folk and military martial disciplines and combine them with ancient health methods known as daoyin (leading and guiding energy) tuna (exhaling and inhaling breaths); the ancient material philosophy of yin and yang; and aspects of Chinese medical theory, particularly the concept of jingluo (meridians through which qi flows). Thus Taijiquan developed into a holistic system that equally cultivates the external and internal aspects, enhancing the functions of muscles, joints and bones and also the performance of the internal organs.
