Abstract

Objective to observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with herbal decoction in raising leukocyte count, IL-2, and CD45 levels in patients undergoing chemotherapy for malignant tumor treatment. Methods fifty-one patients were randomly divided into three groups (each n=17). The patients in the combined treatment group were treated by acupuncture at zusanli (ST 36), sanyinjiao (SP 6), xuehai (SP 10), pishu (BL 20), and (BL 20), and shenshu (BL 23) plus given herbal decoction for internal consumption to help elevate WBC counts. The two control groups were given oral leucogen or herbal decoction only for raising leukocytes, respectively. Clinical efficacy on raising WBC, IL-2 and CD45 was tested and analyzed before treatment and after 2 weeks of treatment. Results as compared with before treatment, the levels of WBC, IL-2 and CD45 in all three groups were increased after the treatment. The therapeutic effect of combined treatment group was the best, with a total effective rate of 100%, which was superior to those (88.2 and 76.5%) of the herbal decoction control group and leucogen control group, and the difference was statistically significant (both P<0.05). Conclusions: the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with herbal decoction for elevating leukocyte count is better than that of herbal decoction alone or leucogen, respectively.
