Abstract

Acupuncture anesthesia is a twentieth-century innovation in medicine. Generally employed as an adjunct to drug-induced anesthesia, it has been applied to a wide variety of surgical operations, as well as nonsurgical procedures such as blood-letting and endoscopies. Sufficient evidence has accumulated to validate the use of acupuncture in surgically-related conditions such as pre-operational anxiety, intra-operational reduction of anesthetic dosage, and post-operational pain relief and recovery. A great number of studies have been conducted to demonstrate that acupuncture can stabilize physiological functions during the anesthesia process. Research also provides significant insight into the mechanism of acupuncture analgesia. This study is a compilation, summarization and review of the developments in acupuncture anesthesia research over the last ten years.
