Abstract
Objective: to observe the clinical effect and safety of acupuncture in treating acousma induced by schizophrenia (SP). Methods: Sixty-nine patients diagnosed as SP with acousma were divided into two groups randomly. The patients in the control group were given the same medication as they were taking before the research began; while, the patients in the treatment group were given acupuncture, five times per week. Participants were evaluated according to the MILLER hallucination scale, positive symptoms scale, negative symptoms scale and side-effects scale before and after the treatments. Results: In the treatment group; after 12-weeks of treatment , comparison of frequency, duration and intensity of hallucinations before and after treatment indicated that the differences were statistically significant, (P<0.05). After 12-weeks of treatment, the frequency scores, directionality and space perception in the treatment group were compared with those of the control group, which showed the differences were statistically significant, (P<0.05). After 12-weeks of treatment, the hallucination, delusion, SAPS and insipid emotion scores in the treatment group were compared with those of the control group, which indicated that the differences were statistically significant, (P < 0.05). No obvious side effects were observed during the acupuncture treatment. Conclusions: through certain scale evaluations and statistical analysis, it was found that applying acupuncture and mediation to treat SP patients with acousma could improve symptoms such as hallucination, delusion and emotional disturbance.
