Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is related to serious syndromes; persistent knee pain, swollen knee joints and stiffness, and can lead to disability. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture is considered to have a good analgesic effect on knee pain. Combining acupuncture with the warming therapeutic effect of moxibustion, warming needle treatment can provide a good alternative approach to alleviate pain experienced by KOA patients. In this study, the effect of warming needle treatment was observed on four subjects with serious KOA. A total of eight treatments over a period of sixteen days were conducted with the degree of pain reduction being recorded via visual analogue scale (VAS). Conditions before and after treatments were recorded. The results showed significant reduction of kee pain, as early as the second treatment on day 4 for all subjects, and the highest extent of pain reduction was >90 per cent. Thus results of this pilot study suggests that a larger study of warming needle method in the treatment of KOA is justified.
